David Pastorius is one of today’s brilliant bassists. Not at all drawing from his legendary uncle, master bassist Jaco Pastorius, David lays it all down with his driving pulse, his virtuosity and musical integrity. He came to the Indaba Music HQ in order to share some of his musical secrets with the Indaba community.
The fretted 4-string stalwart blends, boxes, weaves, and fearlessly leads his groups Local 518 and ElephantGun the pair of hard funk/punk/groove outfits based in Melbourne, Florida. If you haven’t heard David yet, don’t waste a minute and give your ears a thorough dose of hard grooving bass mastery.
The wonderful Rachel Brown is going to perform at The Living Room in New York City tonight as part of the line-up for the CMJ Showcase event. Rachel is a good friend of Indaba Music. This week she is being featured on Indaba’s Suite268 YouTube channel. Check out her unique cover of Mike Posner’s “Cooler Than Me” and her original composition “Bumblebee”.
Tristan Prettyman has all it takes to be a great artist: talent, commitment, love and a story to tell. After releasing two albums and touring extensively, Prettyman took an extended break during which she traveled the globe, had surgery to remove polyps on her vocal cords, got engaged to her long-term boyfriend, dealt with the pain of his ending the engagement, and eventually questioned whether she even wanted to be a musician at all. We’re glad that in the end she did want to! In her words, “Whenever anything ached or caused me pain, I’d tell myself, ‘Save it for the record.’” She kept her word, saving it for her new album, the raw, emotionally charged Cedar and Gold, which is slated for an October 2nd release.
Indaba Music had the honor of having her for an exclusive interview and performance for our Suite 268 channel. Listen, watch and enjoy!
Carolina Liar is an LA-based band with strong Swedish influence, who have been touring extensively in support of their hit albums Coming To Terms and Wild Best Freedom. Carolina Liar blanketed both radio and television, generating nationwide airplay at modern rock and alternative while also appearing in shows such as “The Vampire Diaries,” “American Idol,” “Gossip Girl,” “The Hills,” and many more (MTV actually licensed the entire album). Spotlighted as an iTunes Single of the Week, “Show Me What I’m Looking For” logged more than 600,000 downloads and “I’m Not Over” shot to No. 3 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Chart.
Carolina Liar stopped by in New York and Indaba Music felt blessed to have them record live for our Suite 268 Youtube series. As a bonus, the band’s charismatic vocalist Chad Wolf gave an exclusive interview about the band’s recording process, history, and stories from the road. Among other things, he talks about his best advice: “You’re only as good as the moment that you’re in.”
The iconic band BoDeans sent its charismatic frontman Kurt Neumann to record at the Indaba Music Loft on the Bowery in New York City. Witness this intimate musical moment on Indaba’s music channel Suite 268. Check out Kurt’s soulful interpretation of John Mayer’s Say as well as the original Everything You Wanted.
The BoDeans just released their eleventh album, entitled American Made. And truthfully, these tracks might be best described as the sound of America-made music.
